What are "Language Flags?" (And Should They Exist?)
Просмотров 100 тыс.День назад
Languages are often portrayed with flags, but often, there seems to be no reason or rime for why one flag is chosen over another. English can be represented with a British flag (correct) or an American flag (incorrect) or some kind of combination of the two. Portuguese is most often portrayed not with the flag of Portugal but that of Brazil. And then when we get to Arabic we have a whole differ...

I find the use of that flat design offensive to the UK - where English comes from. It should be more geared towards Britain, as that’s where English comes from.

2:02 The Turkic presence in Crimea has nothing to do with the 13th-century Mongol invasion. Crimean Tatar is a Kypchak-Cuman language most closely related to Kumyk and Karachay-Balkar. Crimean "Tatars" were descended from Cumans and Pechenegs (both are Turkic) that had inhabited Ukraine since the 10th century and the local Sarmatian-Alan (Iranic) and Goth (Germanic) tribes of Crimea. The actual, real Tatars of Mongolia were Para-Mongolic, not Turkic. Russians erroneously referred to both the Mongols and the Turkic subjects of the Golden Horde ruled by the Mongols as "Tatars". Volga Tatars aren't really Tatar/Mongol either. They're a mixture of Kypchak settlers (Turkic) and linguistically Kypchakized Volga Bulgars (also Turkic) that had aldready got Volga Finnic admixture themselves. Russians used to refer to Khakass people as Abakan Tatars even though they were descended from the Yenisei Kyrgyz and had no relation to Tatars. The 19th & 20th century Russian sources even refer to the Non-Kypchak, Oghuz Turkic speaking inhabitants of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia and Turkey's Ardahan, Iğdır, Kars provinces as Tatars (Caucasian Tatars or Transcaucasian Tatars), probably because Russians associated them with the Ilkhanate Mongols that ruled Iran, the South Caucasus and eastern & central Turkey for centuries.

Why do you provide false information to people? You are not Ukrainian phylologist. Ukrainian language is one of the oldest slavic languages. Most similiraties are with Belorusian, Polish, Slovak and even Bosnian. So called rushian language, which is moscovian in fact, appeared at the latest stage and s based on Ukrainian, Bulgarian and Turkish languages. Moscovians who claim to be "slavic" dont't understand any of the slavic languages and their language is very different from other slavics.

The Vikings attacked Norfolk in 865AD. In 869, Edmund, last king of the East Angles, was assassinated. But in Norfolk dialect today, , 'learn' retains its meaning of 'teach'. A child plays riskily and hurts himself... his father opines wryly to the mother, _"That serve 'em roit, dun't ut? That'll larn 'em'!",_ which means, _"It serves him right, doesn't it? That'll teach him!"._ 'That' often stands in for 'it', so "That do, dorn't ut?" means "It does, doesn't t?". The dialect is fading away, sadly. Southern accents, posh and common, increasingly dominate.

What???😮 Sorry to NK, but Korean in SK and NK are truly different! But Korean language button will only translate to SK’s Korean. Plus, people in both sides really hate each other’s system. So, if your design is used, both sides will hate it. Although they were the same language, we only call SK’s language ‘Korean(한국어)’ and call NK’s language ‘Choseon language(조선어)’. Sorry to Hilbert, but please change that part.

The approach I would take: 1. Use the national flag of a language's country origin; for national languages in multilingual countries, or regional languages, use a regional flag whenever possible; 2. If the country of origin is split into multiple political entities, use the flag of the one with a higher population; 3. If a single language is shared by numerous countries, including its country of origin, and these countries are part of a multinational organisation (e.g. The Commonwealth, Arab League), use the flag of the organisation. Please let me know if any language would turn out to be absurdly represented based on these steps.

It's incredibly simple: if you have to assign a flag to a language, make it the language's country of origin. If the variety of language used is largely different from the kind used in the language's country of origin, then use the flag of whatever country is home to the dialect you're using.

One minor correction to the video. Dene does not mean wooded area but a vale, usually wooded - so in Newcastle there is a place called Jesmond Dene which is a small wooded vale, a house called Dene House would be a house at the bottom of a vale. It would be interesting to look at the different parts of Northumberland to see if there is more than one dialect - IME Geordie is very different to the north Northumbrian that I grew up with, but whether it is sufficiently different to count as a separate dialect is beyond me. The idea that some of the words come from Romani is very likely. There was a significant Romani community just over the border at Yetholm which was also the home of the King of Gypsies. As such there were probably a much greater prevalence of travelling gypsies in Northumberland and Newcastle than in other parts of the country and if you go into the 17th and 18th century reports there was clearly a lot of "issues" between the travelling gypsies and locals
